Cruisers coming, but spending less
Growing numbers of travelers are cruising in Alaska but spending less these days, says published reports.
“The typical passenger now is more economy-minded and tends to stay in ports of call rather than venturing out on land tours to see more of Alaska,” according to the Associated Press.
Bob Dindinger, president of Alaska Travel Adventures, was quoted as saying that the days of the high-end crowd are no longer prevalent, and that many cruisers don’t have the disposable income to purchase land packages to Denali or Fairbanks.
“Bigger and cheaper cruise-ship travel continues to dominate the Alaska tourism scene,” the AP said.
Also showing big gains: international fly-in traffic.
Travel agents were quoted as saying they expected both international and domestic travel to Alaska to continue to thrive in the near future.
