Cuba tourism corruption scandal
Top officials in the state-run Cuban tourist industry – including its president – are reportedly under house arrest on suspicion of corruption. According to the BBC News website, millions of dollars are missing from Cubanacan, the hotel, restaurant and travel agency organisation. According to Stephen Gibbs, the BBC’s Havana correspondent, the discovery was made when a new ruling required all companies to convert any US dollars they were holding, into Cuban pesos. He goes on to state that the travel group is now being directly managed by the country’s ministry of tourism.
