Cuba for the first time in history broke the two million-tourist mark, a growth rate of 7.5% over 2003 and 24.5% over 2002.
Visitors came from more than 40 different markets, according to local tourism officials. An estimated 2.3 million visitors will go to Cuba this year, according to estimates.
Only Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic surpassed Cuba in numbers of international tourist arrivals in that area of the Caribbean. Cuba also had more tourists than the Mexican Caribbean areas of Rivera Maya, Cozumel and Islas Mujeres.
Tourism officials acknowledge that tourism facilities such as hotels are having difficulty keeping up with the rising number of visitors.
Strapped for cash, the tourism market is increasingly important to the Cuban economy. Tourism officials say they hope for an increase of up to five million visitors within a few years.
