Deadline for mandatory eTAs to Canada approaches

Monday, 09 Feb, 2016 0

Passengers flying to Canada are reminded they will need an an electronic permit from March 15th this year.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has advised the industry that the entry requirements are changing and air travellers will need an electronic travel authorisation (eTA).

Passengers who are a dual British-Canadian national won’t be able to apply for an eTA, however.

The Canadian government strongly advises all dual nationals to enter Canada using a valid Canadian passport.

The new system has suffered from teething problems where temporarily – usually for a few hours – it has prevented some applications.

But this has only affected visa-exempt Israeli nationals says the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

A spokesman said: "Like many new I.T. solutions, there is always an adjustment period following the launch of a new system.

"Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada is working to resolve this issue by mid-February 2016, approximately one month before eTA becomes a mandatory requirement on March 15, 2016.

"Until then, Israeli nationals who hold a national Israeli passport may continue to travel to Canada with acceptable travel documents and identification, such as a valid passport.

"This issue has not impacted eTA processing times: most eTA applications are approved within minutes of the application being submitted."
