Delta can stay at Dallas Love Field until New Year

Delta Air Lines’ upcoming eviction at Dallas Love Field has been given a stay of execution – thanks to rivals Southwest and United.

Delta will now continue operating its five daily flights to and from Atlanta after Southwest Airlines agreed to let Delta use one of its gates until January 6.

United Airlines will also allow Delta to use ticket gates and other operational space until the end of the year.

After these dates, Delta will have to negotiate a more permanent deal with Southwest, United or Virgin America to lease a slot to continue flying to Atlanta.

Last month Delta was informed its time was up at Love Field from October 13 when the Wright Amendment rule expires.

"We have let Delta know that we are willing to potentially accommodate them on a portion of a gate through Jan. 6, 2015, in order to avoid inconveniencing passengers booked on Delta flights from Love Field during that time," said Southwest vice president and general counsel Mark Shaw.

"Our discussions with Delta are ongoing and any accommodation is subject to agreement between Southwest and Delta covering reasonable terms and conditions."

United said it will ‘offer ticket counter and support space through the end of the year.’

Delta also issued a statement announcing the ongoing negotiations: ‘Delta Air Lines has secured the right to continue to operate service at Dallas Love Field through the end of the year, and continues to work with all parties involved toward a permanent solution to allow for long-term service.’

When the Wright Amendment restrictions end on Monday, all flights operations will transfer to the new 20-gate terminal at Love Field.

Of those 20 gates, Southwest controls 16, with two each for United and Virgin America.
