Delta offering flight waivers for Dominican Republic travelers
Delta Air Lines says it will allow customers booked on flights to the Dominican Republic to change or cancel tickets without charge.
It will waive change and cancellation fees as a growing number of Americans cancel their vacations.
Cancellations are rising and new bookings have plummeted over a number of unexplained deaths in resorts.
‘Due to recent events’ the airline will waive fees for flight to Punta Cana Airport.
It is valid for originally booked travel through August 15.
Customers can rebook for travel no later than November 20, Delta said.
For customers wishing to cancel, a credit will be issued for a future Delta flight valid for one year.
For travelers on flights to the other airports of Santo Domingo and Santiago de los Caballero, the airline will offer options on a case-by-case basis.
According to travel industry analytics firm ForwardKeys, cancellations increased 51% from June 1-19, and new booking for July and August plunged 74% compared to the same period in 2018.
"You can get a long continued problem or things can recover quite quickly, depending on whether people see the threat as being contained or ongoing. The problem you have here is the uncertainty, because the deaths are a mystery," said ForwardKeys spokesperson David Tarsh.
