Dice roll against Packer in Sri Lanka
James Packer’s hopes of developing a mega gaming resort in Colombo appear to have hit a roadblock.
Packer has been negotiating to add a casino in Sri Lanka to those he runs in Australia and Macau.
Sri Lankan politicians have stymied plans by developers, including Packer, to build casinos at three super-luxury resorts planned in the capital after opponents said they would lead to prostitution.
“We will not allow casinos. That we say very clearly,” economic development minister Basil Rajapakse told Parliament.
Last week the main opposition United National Party staged a demonstration in Colombo accusing the government of encouraging prostitution through gambling.
