Disney upgrading Tokyo theme parks
Walt Disney Co has announced plans to spend up to $6 million to expand its theme parks in Japan.
The Oriental Land Company, which operates the Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea theme parks on behalf of Disney, said a large proportion of the money will go towards upgrading Fantasyland in Tokyo Disneyland, which attracted more visitors last year than Disneyland in California.
Disney confirmed that Oriental Land will build a new themed port, special viewing areas for shows and parades, and more shops and restaurants at the Tokyo DisneySea Park.
Previous similar upgrades at Disney have proved successful with increased visitation.
Disney’s California Adventure park in Anaheim underwent a $1.1 billion refurbishment in 2012 which resulted in a 35% increase in visits over the next two years.
Rival Universal is also planning another foray in Asia with a flagship theme park in Beijing, and Six Flags Entertainment also recently announced a deal to develop several theme park projects in Greater China.
