Divers urged to back environmental campaign
Snorkellers and scuba divers across the globe are being enlisted to help save the world’s oceans and seas while they are on holiday.
An initiative called Earthdive is being launched in which divers are being urged to record the health of the marine environment including coral reefs, mangrove swamps and coastal waters.
The scheme, which is being supported by the United Nations Environment Programme through its World Conservation Monitoring Centre in Cambridge is the brainchild of Chris Long.
He said: “If threats such as pollution, over-fishing and climate change continue, it could lead to dire consequences for the global population.
“We have all seen the negative effect that tourism can have on local environments. For recreational scuba divers and snorkellers, Earthdive offers an opportunity to make a positive contribution whilst on holiday. All they need to do is to record what they see – key indicator species, human impacts and observations of illegal trade in endangered species – and then log this information on the Earthdive website, www.earthdive.com,” he said.
“These logs will together create a unique and evolving ‘global snapshot’ of the world’s oceans that can be used by decision-makers at every level.”
