Don Muang – gone but sadly not forgotten

BANGKOK – Airports of Thailand may have a fight on its hands if it goes ahead with plans to transfer some international flights from Suvarnabhumi Airport back to Bangkok’s former international gateway at Don Muang airport.

Don Muang is being used for a handful of domestic flights, but is being lined up to take some international flights to relieve congestion at the new Suvarnabhumi Airport

Airline executives have indicated that there will be a price to pay for a move to Don Muang, including higher operational costs, plus a logistics headache moving passengers between the two airports.

TravelMole understands that the plans for Don Muang could involve two million passengers a year.

Udom Tantiprasongchai, chairman of Orient Thai Airlines, told local media the reopening of Don Muang airport for international flights would be senseless if the government wanted to solve problems prevailing at Suvarnabhumi Airport, which has been in service for slightly more than a year.

He said that if low cost airlines flew from Don Muang to some key international destinations, they would cut airfares in order to compete with THAI.

“That would damage the whole system of the national aviation industry,” he warned.
