Doubt cast on Fiji’s Dubai tourism plan
A Fiji Times report says that the former chief executive of the Fiji Visitors Bureau says the interim Government’s support of tourism is weak because it reduced the tourism budget by 43 per cent when it took over the reigns of leadership.
When contacted for a comment on the recent trip by interim Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, interim Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and interim Trade Minister Tom Ricketts to the 8th Global Travel and Tourism Summit in Dubai, former FVB boss Bill Gavoka said the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua-led Government allocated $17.5 million in the 2007 budget.
Mr Gavoka said Mahendra Chaudhry’s revised budget cut their budget to $10million.
He said if Fiji wants to promote tourism it should do so in Australia and New Zealand.
“For us to expect visitors to travel from the Gulf (Dubai area) to Fiji would be ten years too early,” he said.
