Dozens dead after Vietnam super typhoon

Wednesday, 10 Sep, 2024 0

Authorities have reported at least 87 people have now died after a super typhoon devastated parts of Northern Vietnam.

More than 50 people are reported still missing, officials say.

It led to heavy rain, flooding and landslides.

Typhoon Yagi is the strongest tropical storm in Vietnam for 30 years.

It has left about 1.5 million people without power.

Yagi has now weakened to a tropical depression but at its height brought wind speeds of about 150km/h.

It badly damaged bridges, blew roofs off buildings, and caused landslides across more than a dozen northern Vietnam provinces including the provinces of Thai Nguyen and Yen Bai.

In addition, more than 750 were injured, said officials at the ministry of agriculture.

Before Yagi made landfall on Vietnam’s northeastern coast on Saturday, Typhoon Yagi killed 24 people in southern China and the Philippines.
