Dozens of Japan local governments mull accommodation taxes
More than 90 different municipal governments across Japan are considering imposing new lodging taxes.
A recent survey by Japan news outlet Kyodo News found 92 local councils are mulling new accommodation taxes at hotels and ryokan inns.
The survey was conducted between June and July.
It found 35 local governments have already got approval, and of those, 12 had already implemented lodging taxes,
The other 23 plan to do so by 2026.
Seven local governments have passed ordinances and plan to seek approval from Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications, as required under law.
Another 60 municipalities said they had considered lodging taxes but decided not to go ahead.
