Drama continues in Solomon Islands
The Solomon Islands Tourism Minister Nelson Ne’e has been refused bail after a brief court appearance in the capital Honiara.
He was seeking bail on health grounds.
Mr Ne’e and the newly-appointed Police Minister Charles Dausabea are both still in custody for allegedly inciting the riots in Honiara last month.
Mr Dausabea is due to appear in court tomorrow.
Australia and New Zealand have condemned their appointment as ministers.
The new Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Manasseh Sogavare, has accused Australia’s Foreign Affairs Minister of breaching diplomatic protocol and of serious interference in the country’s domestic affairs.
Mr Downer said he was “deeply disappointed that two people who are behind bars facing charges for inciting a riot which led to massive destruction of property in Honiara … have already been appointed to the cabinet”.
New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Helen Clark, said she was “aghast” at the appointments.
