Earthscan is inviting participants to join the authors of Cruise Tourism in Polar Regions and Sustainable Tourism in Island Destinations for an event that explores the issues of achieving sustainability within the tourism industry.
The seminar will endeavor to
- Understand the relationship between tourism, development and the environment
- Learn about the specific challenges and successes of tourism in two distinct regions: Islands and Polar areas
- Discover solutions that can be implemented to help preserve fragile environments and communities

Patrick Maher will be delving into issues of environmental and social sustainability focusing on the issues faced by the cruise industry in Polar Regions. Rachel Dodds will conclude by presenting innovative ways of implementing sustainability in island regions that face specific challenges due to their geography and historical development.
Patrick Maher is an Associate Professor in the Outdoor Recreation and Tourism Management Program at the University of Northern British Columbia, Canada.
Rachel Dodds is an Associate Professor at the Ted Rogers School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Ryerson University, and the Director of Sustaining Tourism, a consultancy.
