Earthquake strikes near Christchurch
A powerful earthquake has struck near Christchurch on New Zealand’s South Island, causing cliffs to collapse into the sea.
However, there has been no major damage to the city which was devastated by another earthquake almost exactly five years ago.
The epicentre of Sunday’s 5.8 quake was just nine miles east of Christchurch at a depth of nine miles.
The country’s seismological body Geonet said there were more than 40 aftershocks.
There were no reports of serious injuries, although several buildings were evacuated. The Christchurch City Council said cliffs collapsed in several places along the coast.
