Editor’s Call: Unleash the power of the grey nomads
CANBERRA – The Australian government is working on a plan that will allow its over-60 years old senior citizens to enjoy common travel perks throughout the country.
At present, travel concessions available to seniors in one state may not be recognised in another state.
But soon all states will recognise senior travellers and offer them similar discounts on travel and services whether they’re Victorians travelling in Western Australia or Queenslanders exploring South Australia.
But why stop there? By and large, senior citizens are the new traveling elite. mostly unencumbered by mortgages and large bank overdrafts. Let’s extend their perks across the globe.
This is something that Asean tourism leaders could discuss at their annual get-together (ATF), starting this week in Hanoi.
An Asean Seniors Pass would allow Singapore senior citizens to enjoy special privileges and discounts in Malaysia – and vice versa. Thailand’s oldies could save travel dollars by enjoying discounts in Brunei or Indonesia.
If the scheme takes off, it could embrace Asean+3 – China, India and Japan – and be extended to include Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
As grim forecasts of dwindling international visitor numbers grip the tourism industry with fear, many NTOs are turning inward, attempting to boost their stocks by encouraging domestic tourists.
That’s fine as far as it goes, but enticing people to holiday in their own backyard is difficult once they have had a taste of overseas travel.
So onward golden oldies – get out there and SKI – Spend the Kids’ Inheritance – and save the travel industry.
