Egypt expresses ‘deep sorrow’ following shooting of Mexican tourists
Egypt has promised to publish the findings of a report into the killings of Mexican tourists and Egyptian civilians by its own security forces as they picnicked in the desert near the Oasis of Farafra.
The Egyptian ministry of tourism issued a statement yesterday afternoon confirming that of the 12 killed, two were Mexican tourists. A further 10 Mexican tourists and Egyptians are being treated in hospital for injuries sustained when their convoy of four vehicles came under fire from police and military.
They were allegedly travelling in an area of the Wahat Western Desert which is off-limits to civilians.
The statement from the ministry of tourism said: "It is with deep sorrow and sadness that we have received the news of the death of Mexican tourists and Egyptian citizens near the Oasis of Farafra.
"An investigation within the Ministry of Tourism is underway to determine the causes that lead to the loss of innocent lives and the outcome of this investigation will be published in due time.
"The Minister of Tourism offers his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and all efforts are now exerted towards the wellbeing of the injured."
