Eight killed in Jakarta hotel blast
Suicide bomber immediately suspected of setting off explosion
At least eight people have been killed in what appears to have been a suicide bomb attack on a five-star hotel in the Indonesian capital city of Jakarta. Reports suggest at least another 60 people have been injured in the blast, which took place outside the JW Marriot Hotel.
Eye witnesses have stated that there were three explosions, and that fires immediately broke out in the damaged building. Management at the hotel say most workers and guests were evacuated before the incident, which took place around lunchtime in Jakarta.
Many commentators have been quick to point out that the blast has come as the trial of the man suspected of being behind last years Bali bombing comes to a close. The trial of Amrozi bin Hurhashym, who is accused of masterminding last year’s attacks, which killed more than 200 people, is expected to finish on Thursday.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office continues to warn British travellers against visiting Jakarta, stating that there is a “high risk of terrorism” throughout the country. For the full advice visit www.fco.gov.uk/travel.
