ETA warns tourists to avoid war-zone
Basque separatist group reiterates threat to attack Spanish holiday industry
The Basque separatist terror group ETA has warned foreign travellers not to go to Spain, stating that the area was a “war zone” that it is intending to strike at economic and tourist interests.
In a statement that claimed responsibility for recent bomb attacks in Alicante and Benidorm, which injured 13 people, the terror group stated: “In 2003 ETA will once again strike hard against the Spanish tourist industry and it cannot guarantee that anyone who enters the war zone will not be injured.”
According to a report in The Independent, the group referred to warnings issued last year and sent to tour companies, foreign embassies and newspapers, that it would attack resorts. It added that tourists ran “a personal risk if they choose Spain as a holiday destination”.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office, at www.fco.gov.uk/travel, continues to warn of possible terrorist activity by ETA but points out that “the vast majority of visits to Spain are trouble-free”.
