EU transport chief steps down over free flights row
A senior EU transport official has been forced to stand down amid an investigation into free flights.
Politico reported Henrik Hololei accepted free flights in business class on Qatar Airways even when the EU was negotiating a major aviation agreement with Qatar.
Hololei is director general of the European Commission’s transport department.
He officially leaves the post on 1 April.
Hololei got free flights on Qatar Airways nine times between 2015 and 2021, the outlet reported.
Six of the free flights happened during negotiations for the aviation deal.
