Eurostar launches high-speed rail service to Swiss resorts

Eurostar has made it easier for skiers to travel to Switzerland by train by launching a weekly high-speed service from London St Pancras and Ashford to some of the country’s top resorts.

Tickets for the trains, which will run from December 22 to April 13, went on sale last week. Trains will travel to the heart of the Swiss Alps and the Valais region, serving several resorts including Verbier, Zermatt, Saas Fee and Gstaad. Journeys will take about eight to nine hours.

Passengers will travel on Eurostar from St Pancras or Ashford change at Lille Europe on to the high-speed TGV Lyria, which will stop at Aigle, Martigny, Visp and Brig stations, from where passengers can pick up local transfers to their resorts.

Previously, Lyria only operated services from Paris to Switzerland, which meant Eurostar’s UK passengers had to transfer from the Gare du Nord to the Gare du Lyon, which was tricky, especially when carrying ski equipment.

Eurostar commercial director Nick Mercer said: "Our research shows ski customers are seeking a more civilised way to reach their resorts by travelling by high-speed rail from London to the heart of the Swiss Alps. Our direct ski services to the French Alps have grown in popularity year on year and we expect this new service to the Swiss Alps to have similar appeal.

Return fares start at £189, which includes ski or snowboard carriage.
