Ex Qantas chief pilot to advise Tiger

Grounded Tiger Airways Australia has appointed ex Qantas industry veteran Captain Chris Manning as safety advisor in a bid to convince the Civil Aviation Safety Authority that it is fit to resume flying operations.

Tiger is grounded until at least August 1 as the aviation safety watchdog assesses the measures the budget airline is taking to convince authorities that its safety standards are up to scratch.

Tiger said Captain Manning would work directly with new CEO, Tony Davis, “to ensure that the airline is applying the highest levels of operational safety management across the company”.

Manning has spent more than 40 years in aviation. He is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, a former president of the Australian and International Pilots Association and was most recently the chief pilot and group general manager of Flight Operations with Qantas.

He began his flying career as a cadet pilot with Qantas in 1970.

Davis said the appointment “is another step towards reassuring the industry and the public that Tiger Airways is committed to a safe, viable, and long term future in Australia”.

Meanwhile, Singapore Airlines has named Campbell Wilson as the first CEO of the new no-frills, low-fare airline that it plans to launch next year.

Wilson, 40, has been with SIA for more than 15 years. He joined the Singapore flag carrier in April 1996 in Auckland and held marketing and sales positions in New Zealand and Australia.
