Expedia TAAP rides the Aussie dollar wave
The strong Aussie dollar appears to be good news for travel agents as Australians target the United States to take advantage of the favourable currency exchange rate.
Expedia Travel Agents Affiliate Program saw a record high for transactions last week.
“Bookings through September and early October were trending to Asia Pacific destinations as the northern summer drew to an end,†said Stuart Udy, Expedia manager of Asia Pacific travel agency distribution, “but as news of the strengthening Aussie dollar intensified, last week we saw a record spike in bookings for the US.
“The top destinations were New York, Los Angeles and Las Vegas, accounting for 20 percent of bookings.â€
Other top destinations included London and Japan with Adelaide, Sydney, Singapore, Hong Kong and Phuket also included in the top performers.
Comparing figures to bookings for the previous week, only Hawaii and LAX from the US appeared in the top 20 destinations.
