Greece: Security is stepped up following sharp rise in attacks

Greek authorities are to provide extra security for visitors from the UK following a rise in attacks on tourists.

Following the publication of Foreign and Commonwealth Office figures that suggest violent crime of tourist is rising fast, number of police officers will be doubled in many resorts including Kavos and Faliraki.

Last year, there were 34 rapes of British citizens reported; there were just 17 in 1998. And there were 57 violent attacks last year in Greece, compared to 23 four years earlier.

A Greek National Tourist Office spokesman told The Observer: “These police will make sure that young adults who have overindulged get safely home. Some will be in plain clothes, so that people don’t feel offended when they try to help them.”

A spokeswoman for ABTA applauded the move, but added: “What is really important for holidaymakers, and women especially, it to take their personal safety as seriously on holiday as they do at home and not to be over-relaxed.”
