Faliraki crackdown promised
Police in the Greek holiday resort of Faliraki have promised a strict response to yobbish behaviour by British tourists. As reported, the resort was plagued by bad behaviour last summer, with reports of drunkenness, tourists having sex in public, and fighting. The bad news culminated in the death of 17-year-old Paddy Doran, who was killed in a bar brawl. But, according to the online news provider Ananova, the crackdown will begin in earnest next year, with Faliraki getting its own police station with 20 officers, most of whom will be English-speaking. Speaking at a press conference in London this morning, the mayor of Faliraki said the crackdown would be achieved through a “softly softly” approach. He is quoted as saying: “We have an obligation to ensure a safe and happy holiday for all our visitors to Rhodes. These are not draconian measures – we want young visitors to keep coming to Rhodes.”
