Faliraki operator voices ghost town fears
Tourists will just go elsewhere, says FTO area manager
British tour operators in the maligned resort of Faliraki say the tourist industry on the entire island of Rhodes will be destroyed if a ban on pub crawls is not overturned.
According to the online news provider Ananova, the area manager for the Federation of Tour Operators, believes the resort will turn into a ghost town. She is quoted thus: “I have seen the same thing happen in Benitzes, in Corfu. The locals decided they didn’t want any trouble with tourists being too drunk and changed the laws. It became a ghost town.”
The website describes a new rule in the resort, which restricts pub crawls to no more than 100 drinkers, going to no more than three venues, and holidaymakers must be taken to the first venue and from the last venue by coach.
Ms Abery, who has been based on Rhodes for three years, reportedly added: “This just won’t work. Our holidays are targeted at the youth market and bar crawls are our main selling point. They are just going to start going on holiday elsewhere.”
