Fatal suicide bomb attacks in Tunisia prompt travel alert
Two suicide bomb attacks have killed a police officer and injured several others in the Tunisian capital, Tunis.
The Foreign Office is advising visitors to avoid the Medina and the area around Avenue Habib Bourguiba.
Holidaymakers are also urged to remain vigilant, keep up to date with developments and follow the advice and instructions of local authorities.
The first blast targeted a police patrol on Tunis’ central~Charles de Gaulle street, not far from the French embassy.
According to Tunisian officials, one police officer was killed, and another was wounded, along with three civilians.
Shortly afterwards, a second attacker targeted a base of the national guard in the capital’s al-Qarjani district, injuring four security personnel.
No group has come forward to claim responsibility for the blasts.
In March, Tunisia extended its state of emergency that has been in place since November 2015.
It has been extended a number of times following two deadly terror attacks, the first at the Bardo Museum in Tunis in March 2015, which was followed by the gunning down of 38 people, including 30 British holidaymakers, at the beach resort of Sousse three months later.
