FCO extends Kenya’s ‘no go’ areas

Kenya’s ‘no go’ areas have been extended by the FCO to include some beach resorts due to the continued terrorist threat.

It now advises against all but essential travel to the coast from Tiwi (just south of Mombasa) all the way up to the border with Somalia.

This area includes Mombasa Island, Moi International Airport (Mombasa Airport), Malindi, Kilifi and Watamu.

But the Kenyan tourism board said this did not affect Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Ukunda Airport, all safari circuits and some beach areas.

Beach areas operating as normal are Diani Beach, Galu Beach, Kinondo, Msambweni, Funzi Island, Shimoni and Wasini Island.

David Holland, sales manager of African Pride, said very few customers were still adding beach extensions to safari bookings but added the operator would work with any agents or clients affected.

He said: "There has been a general downturn in demand for Kenya and we have continued to take bookings mainly for safari.

"Those that have required a beach extension to a safari, which hasn’t been too many, have been accommodated in Malindi and Diani or more likely Zanzibar."

He said that the change of advice to include Malindi and other resort areas in the no travel zone would be likely to stop clients including Kenya beaches at all.

He added: "We will of course work with our agents to do the best for their clients and comply with all FCO advice."

The FCO said: "Terrorism represents a shared threat and requires a shared response.

"The UK provides an extensive and ongoing programme of counter-terrorism assistance to the Kenyan Government, and is working closely with the Kenyan security agencies to counter this shared threat through assistance on investigating, prosecuting and detaining terrorists in line with international Human Rights standards."
