The Foreign Office is now advising against all travel to Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor and Suez following mass demonstrations across Egypt.
The FCO also says that any British nationals in these cities already should leave and that Brits in other cities where there are protests should “stay indoors wherever possible.”
The FCO website warns that if anyone is travelling to, through or from Egypt, they should check with their tour operator or airline to make sure flights are still operating.
With tear gas, rubber bullets and live ammunition being used by police against demonstrators, the streets in the affected cities are not safe, it adds.
Violent gangs have been spotted looting from shops in Cairo and Alexandria. The FCO advises that with no internet or mobile phone networks operating, Brits in affected areas should watch the news closely and adhere to the night curfew.
Thomson, First Choice, Thomas Cook, Kuoni and Cosmos have already cancelled excursions to Cairo and Thomson said it has been in touch with its 27 clients staying in the city although none have requested to come back early.
Some 45 people have been killed in the violent clashes since Friday. Calls for President Mubarak’s resignation have so far gone unanswered.
Instead the leader has tried to appease angry Egyptians by reshuffling his cabinet. This has not quelled the rising tide of unrest nationals feel about their president’s style of leadership.
