FCO issues new advice for Japan

The Foreign Office is advising Brits against all but essential travel to north eastern Japan and Tokyo as the country struggles to cope with devastation caused by the earthquake and tsunami last week that is thought to have claimed as many as 10,000 lives.
Yesterday the Japanese Metrological Association said that there is a 70% chance of a 7.0 or greater earthquake in the next three days which could trigger another tsunami and aftershocks of more than 6.0.
The Japanese people have been warned to stay away from low-lying coastal area.
Meanwhile the country is fighting to avoid a nuclear disaster after explosions at the Fukushima power plant. The government has declared a state of emergency as fears grow of a nuclear meltdown.
On its website, the FCO said: “There is a 20km exclusion zone around the facility, which we continue to urge British nationals to observe.
“This is consistent with the severity of the reported incident, with the independent information that we have, and with international practice. We will keep this under constant review.”
It added: “Embassy staff and British volunteers are helping to get information to our citizens about the situation, and working closely with Japanese officials.
“Embassy response teams at Tokyo’s Haneda and Narita airports are assisting British nationals and liaising with airlines.”
All international flights into the country are operating as normal although transportation within Japan is severely disrupted.
Japan Rail trains from Tokyo station are not operating or are delayed and the Narita Express services are also cancelled. The Tokyo metro is working at a reduced capacity. Bullet trains and the Tokyo monorail, however, are running as normal.
British nationals currently in Japan are being urged to contact the FCO helpline to report there are safe or to ask for assistance.
