FCO lifts ban on travel to Indonesia

Tuesday, 08 Jul, 2004 0

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office has lifted its advisory on travel to Indonesia.

The move was welcomed by the UK chapter of the Pacific Asia Travel Association which has been lobbying for a lifting of the block on travel to Bali following terrorist attacks in the resort more than 18 months ago.

The FCO, amending its travel advice to the country, said it was “no longer advising against non-essential travel”.

But the FCO added that it continued to receive reports that terorists plan further attacks on westerners and western interests.

“They have shown in previous attacks, like the Bali bombings, that they have the means and the motivation to carry out successful attacks,” the FCO said.

The change follows a recent review of travel advice announced by foreign secretary Jack Straw, who said: “In future in the case of intelligence-based terrorist threats, the Government will advise against travel to a specific country only in situations of extreme and imminent danger”.
