Fed up with overtourism, Japan town to block out view of Mount Fuji
A Japanese town is taking extreme measures to rid itself of annoying tourists.
The town of Fujikawaguchiko is planning to erect a huge barrier to block out an iconic view of Mount Fuji.
A town official says they have had enough of inconsiderate tourists thronging a car park to take pictures of the mountain.
It has caused overcrowding and illegal parking around a pharmacy and clinic.
Some tourists have been seen climbing on top of the clinic to get photos.
Signs and warnings from security guards have not stopped the problem.
Now the town will erect a huge mesh net to block out the view as a last resort.
Authorities also announced a US$13 fee will be levied this summer to all visitors wishing to climb Mount Fuji along its most popular route, with daily numbers capped.
