Few travel buyers have sustainable policy

More than half of business travel buyers have no green purchasing policy in place, according to a new study

A poll of 1,400 travel managers found that 67% have no sustainable policy.

Of those, 21% said that being green is simply not a priority and 12% claim it’s ‘not economically viable right now’.

Almost have if respondents (48%) admitted the recession has forced them to re-prioritise their commitment to buying environmentally responsible travel altogether.

However, 21% are planning to introduce a green strategy and the half of the 44% of respondents who currently have one in place have plans to grow it.

David Chapple, event director of the Business Travel and Meetings Show, which commissioned the survey, said: “The business travel industry can no longer ignore the importance of being green.

“And though suppliers and buyers are being increasingly proactive in this area, there’s no denying they are finding it a challenge; a challenge that has been hindered somewhat by the recession.

“However, government and indeed global legislation is pushing green firmly back up the agenda and as an industry we need to act.”

BTMS 2010 takes place on February 9-10 at Earls Court in London.
