Fiji Times says no talks between State and tourism stakeholders in Fiji!

An interesting report in the Fiji Times this morning says that there have been no talks between the State and tourism stakeholders in the private sector over the interim administration’s suggestion that resorts and hotels jointly fund the work of the Fiji Visitors Bureau, the suggestion following the significant cut to the bureau’s budget for 2007, with FVB allocated $10million, including funds for the work of the Tourism Action Group.

The bureau had asked for $15million and $3.8million for TAG.

Tourism Minister Bernadette Rounds-Ganilau said she was not sure as to when exactly consultations between the Government and stakeholders would start but would look into the matter.

Fiji Hoteliers Association president Dixon Seeto said at the moment various sectors of the industry have already been spending large amounts of money in promoting Fiji as a safe travel destination.

He said the Government’s talks of engaging the hotels and resorts in jointly funding the Fiji Visitors Bureau marketing efforts have yet to begin and that various sectors of the tourism industry have undertaken promotional works individually and also injunction with the FVB, adding, “Collectively on a good day the industry would spend around $100million in marketing and promoting Fiji to the world”.

“This is by all the stakeholders with the airline being the largest, followed by the hotels and the rest of the industry.”

TravelMole ran a major trade campaign over the end of 2006 and early 2007 with no financial support from the FVB or TAG with the sole supporters being Fiji hotels and resorts.

TravelMole has also been very critical of the failed consumer campaign and that trade promotion would have been much more effective, with TravelMole’s criticism picked up extensively in Fiji media.
