Fiji tourism needs support says Fiji hoteliers and employers chief Dixon Seeto

A report in the Fiji Times says that the Fijian economy needs to support the tourism industry if it is to counter the warning of an economic crisis issued by the Reserve Bank of Fiji, spokesman for the Fiji Employers Federation Dixon Seeto said today.

His comments follow remarks by RBFs Deputy Governor of the urgent need to boost exports, work towards better growth rate and watch balance of payment made at the Tourism Forum last week.

Mr Seeto said in order to heed RBFs warning, more attention was needed in the tourism sector which, if given the proper support, could bring about a turnaround to the economic predicament.

He said the turnaround that tourism could bring would be immediate, unlike other industries which would take more time and effort.

”Other industries need time before it can bring about economic turnaround,” he said.

”Fiji does not have that time.”  “You can’t blame the Reserve Bank if they take draconian measures to preserve and not compromise the economy.”

”Tourism contributes to all other sectors immensely.”

“The repercussions in the tourism sector can be felt in all other sectors.”

“That’s an indicator of just how big the industry is.”

He said once supermarkets indicated business was slow, it was enough to signify the economy is not a good shape because people need to buy food.

”We need to bring the economy back into shape.”  “A poor economy spawns bad things like crime and theft.”  “We need to try and curb this effect,” Mr Seeto said.
