Final call for US Airways this fall
US Airways will touch down one last time on October 17, signalling the final act of the American Airlines-US Airways mega merger.
That is the date when US Airways officially ceases to exist as an operational carrier, with all US Airways’ flight codes moving over to the American system.
Customers with tickets booked on US Airways beyond October 16 will be informed by email from July 18 of their new reservation information including amended American-only flight codes.
American said it has cancelled some flights either side of October 16 in order to free up schedules to cope with any glitches or teething problems due to the transition.
"We have not spared any expense in order to ensure we have the quality we need for something like this," said American’s chief integration officer Maya Leibman.
"When we do the reservations migration, there is nothing for customers to do. There is no need to call reservations."
American said it will gradually move existing US Airways’ booking over to the American system over the course of three months rather than risk a one-off data dump.
Separately, American told investors it would reign in its expansion plans this year.
Undeterred by an ongoing Department of Justice probe into alleged airline collusion, the airline said it would increase capacity only by about 1%, compared to the 2% it had stated previously.
Since the DOJ investigation was announced passenger groups have so far filed 19 antitrust lawsuits against American, Southwest Airlines, Delta and United.
