Royal Caribbean International is to base a ship in Palma for the first time to fill the fly-cruise void left by the withdrawal of casual cruise line Ocean Village at the end of this summer.
The 2,446-passsenger Grandeur of the Seas will operate summer cruises from Palma starting in May 2011.
The family-friendly cruises, which go on sale next month and are to be “competitively priced”, will be dedicated to UK and Irish holidaymakers.
The ship will sail on two seven-night itineraries covering the Italian Mediterranean and the Spanish Mediterranean. These can be taken consecutively to provide a 14-night cruise.
Royal Caribbean said it will be supporting the Grandeur sailings with a trade and consumer marketing campaign, including dedicated point of sale material for agents.
The line’s associate vice president and general manager UK and Ireland Jo Rzymowska said: “Our research has found that Royal Caribbean International is now the brand of choice for families choosing to cruise.
“Growing our itinerary options to offer popular family sunshine destinations as the embarkation point for a cruise will further increase our market share in this sector.
“The introduction of Grandeur of the Seas; home-porting in Palma and dedicated to the UK and Irish market will offer guests seven-night or back-to-back 14 night cruise combinations with greater access to smaller ports along the French Riviera, Italian coastline and Balearic Islands which we know are particularly favourable to this market.”
