First stranded Sanya tourists fly home
Tourists stranded in Sanya, Hainan have started flying home.
A plane flew 125 tourists from Sanya back to Xi’an in northwest China.
Around 80,000 tourists are stranded due to lockdowns in Sanya as new Covid-19 infections continue.
The Hainan Covid-19 prevention and control centre said tourists will be evacuated in an orderly manner in various different groups to avoid any further transmission of the virus.
Authorities will allow people to leave with two negative nucleic acid tests within 48 hours in batches subject to charter flight schedules.
Hainan recorded nearly 2,000 new infections in the past week.
The Hainan Center for Disease Control and Prevention says the outbreak is the Omicron variant BA.5.
Thirty-three hotels with over 6,900 rooms are designated as isolation centres.
Hainan is known as the ‘Hawaii of China ’and is an extremely popular holiday destination.
