First Tiger Airways aircraft arrives in Melbourne bringing with it………
With Tiger Airways first Airbus aircraft arriving in Melbourne yesterday, [Pictured right] Matt Hobbs, Head of Media and PR for Tiger told The Mole that Tiger passengers would be able to fly from Launceston to the Gold Coast for $14.95 and $24.95 to Rockhampton, Mackay and the Sunshine Coast………..including taxes and charges!
It appears that the Tiger Airways fares will offer some passengers a cheaper fare to the Gold Coast than it costs to get a taxi to the airport, with the arrival yesterday further heralding the long awaited air fare price war.
The fares announced yesterday are the cheapest the airline, which will start flying on November 23 has offered to date, with a report in The Age saying that Jetstar spokesman Simon Westaway said the offer indicated Tiger’s business model was unsustainable, adding, “That is quite frankly well below what you’d have to pay for most taxes and charges”.
“$14.95, beyond being a nice gimmick, that ain’t a sustainable fare offering.” He did not say whether Jetstar would match the fares.
Chris Ward from Tiger Airways refused to say how many customers would be able to get the $14.95 tickets, with the fares going on sale today and available from November until March, except for a month over Christmas.
