Five hospitalized after severe turbulence
Five people were taken to hospital after severe turbulence hit a American Airlines flight.
After landing in Raleigh-Durham, three flight attendants and two passengers were transported to hospital.
The airline said it was unexpected turbulence.
An RDU spokesperson said a medical met the flight when it landed late on Sunday night.
“It was absolutely horrific. People thought that they were going to lose their lives,” one passenger told local media.
The airline said the seat belt sign was on at the time but this has been disputed.
One of the flight attendants reportedly suffered a broken arm and was burned by hot water. It happened during the serving of drinks.
“American Airlines flight 1286 from Miami to Raleigh-Durham landed safely at RDU after encountering unexpected turbulence while in flight. We thank our crew members for their professionalism,” the airline said.
The FAA is investigating.
