Five more travel myths to ignore

Fight jetlag by not sleeping? No. Don’t drive in a foreign country? Myth No. 2.

Those were among five myths debunked by participants in a survey sponsored by Smarter Travel.

Not sleeping during your flight? “The secret to fighting jet lag has been discussed by lots of travel experts,” the site says. “But the best advice is to take a shower and a short nap (no more than two hours) after landing,” Smarter Travel says.

Driving in a foreign country may seem scary but the site says it is “one of the best ways to really see parts of a country you might not otherwise see.” But take precautions such as learning about road signs and driver restrictions.

Another myth is that hostels are only for young people. “Hostels can be a great budget option for any age group,” the site says. Many are more like beds and breakfasts than the Spartan reputation of shared bathrooms and noisy neighbors.

The site also bashes long traditional traveler’s checks as “virtual dinosaurs” that are not widely accepted in many places, and those familiar “don’t go to” warnings.

Paris is one example as being notorious for rudeness to travelers.

“If you want people to be friendly and helpful then approach them the same way,” suggested one participant in the survey.
