Flair Airlines keeps license after ownership investigation

The Canadian Transportation Agency has deemed Edmonton-based Flair Airlines to be a Canadian airline.

It says it meets the country’s ownership rules, and can continue flying after an investigation.

US-based investor 777 Partners LLC has a 25% stake but there were concerns it had influence well beyond that.

The agency investigated why 777 Partners effectively controlled the airline’s board of directors and how Flair was dependent on 777 for financing and leasing of its aircraft.

Flair says it has now made changes to its corporate structure so its chairman and a majority of its board are Canadian.

“Though we never doubted it, it’s still fantastic to say once and for all: Flair is Canadian,” said airline chief Stephen Jones.

“We’ve made significant concessions ourselves, and 777 Partners have made significant concessions,” Jones added.

Flair has also restructured its debt with 777 Partners.

It ‘addressed the concerns raised in its preliminary determination,’ the Canadian Transportation Agency said.
