Flights cancelled as big freeze hits Europe

British Airways has cancelled dozens of flights as a big freeze is forecast for much of Britain.

The airline made a decision to cancel some short-haul flights yesterday and today after snow and ice were forecast.

“During cold weather conditions aircraft have to be de-iced prior to departure to ensure that they are safe and additional measures are taken to ensure the safety of our operation is maintained at all times,” said a spokesman.

“We are sorry for any disruption to our customers’ travel plans and will do all we can to minimise the effect the weather has on our operations.”

Air France also warned of delays and cancellations with snowfall expected over the Paris area today.

“Consequently, our flight schedule may be disrupted. Delays and cancellations are to be expected. If you wish, we offer you rebooking options at no extra cost,” it told passengers.

The UK’s Met Office has issued yellow warnings of snow and sleet for many parts of the country.

It said sleet, snow and hail showers, some heavy, will affect western areas through Tuesday, with icy stretches forming overnight.

Sleet and snow showers will affect parts of eastern England later today and for a time overnight, when clearing skies will lead to ice forming in places, lasting into Wednesday morning.

“A spell of sleet and snow will continue to move southeast across the UK on Tuesday, gradually weakening across England and Wales,” it said.

“Some roads and railways may be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services. As rain, sleet and snow clears Northern Ireland and Scotland overnight Monday, ice may form on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.”
