Flights resume at Marseille after wildfires forced airport closure

Marseille Airport is back open and flights are resuming.

However, it is playing catch up with delays expected today.

The airport closed on Tuesday as wildfires encroached on the city.

It caused major disruption with rail travel also impacted.

Marseille flights slowly started resuming this morning

“We encourage travellers to check our updated list of departing flights and arriving flights, and to reach out to their operating airline for more information,” the airport said in a morning update.

Confirmed flight cancellations for today include Turkish Airlines to Istanbul, Lufthansa to Frankfurt, Air France to Paris CDG and Iberia to Madrid.

The UK Foreign Office updated its advisory: “Fires have become more frequent because of drought and high temperatures. French authorities may evacuate areas and close roads for safety reasons. Travellers staying in a high-risk area were urged to check the local safety and emergency procedures”.

Yesterday, some flights bound for Marseille were diverted to other airports such as Nice and Nimes.

Martine Vassal, president of the Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolitan area, said winds have weakened but some areas are still ablaze, although fire crews have mostly contained them.
