Flood warning for Italy, Greece and the Balkans
Weather experts are warning of possible flash flooding and mudslides in parts of Italy, the Balkans and Greece as a rare storm system in the Mediterranean.
According to Accuweather, a storm is taking a rare early-September track across northern Africa into the Med, bringing heavy rain to southern Italy and into Balkan Peninsula for the second half of the week.
"The storm is expected to strengthen as it tracks northward bringing heavy rainfall and a high risk for flooding along its path," it said.
It said there will be rainfall of 2-4 inches (50-100mm) will be common and in some localized areas this will reach up to 6 inches (150mm).
While flooding is not expected farther north, rain is expected across Campania, Basilicata and Puglia where amounts will generally be smaller.
"Areas from Sicily through Calabria are the most likely regions of Italy to experience flooding rainfall from the storm. Flash flooding will be the biggest concern; however, mudslides are also possible."
The downpours will then head into western Greece and southern Albania, before spreading northeastward across northern Greece, Macedonia, western Bulgaria and southern Serbia.
"These areas will also be at high risk for flash flooding along with mudslides due to the rugged terrain of the region," said the Accuweather report.
