Florence to ban 4×4 vehicles
The Italian city of Florence has reportedly decided to get tough on owners of 4×4 vehicles, banning bigger examples of the gas-guzzling vehicles from its central streets.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the ban will come into effect on January 1, after which “non-resident owners of cars fitting the council’s description” will not be given permits to enter the historical centre of the city.
Vehicles weighing more than 1,800 kilos, or having tyres more than 70cm in diameter, will be affected.
Claudio del Lungo, city councillor for the environment, is quoted as saying: “I have nothing against off-road vehicles being used in the countryside but I am determined to keep them off the roads in the town.
“Parking is a problem that almost all major cities have in common – in Florence, however, the situation is more dramatic owing to the medieval streets.”
