FO warns about tourist crime in Dominican Republic
The Foreign Office has updated its advice on the Dominican Republic to warn about crime affecting tourists.
The website said there have been a number of incidents in Santo Domingo where foreigners have been mugged at gunpoint in broad daylight while walking in residential districts.
In January 2013 twenty US visitors were mugged by armed attackers on the same street (Avenida Bolivar) in two related incidents.
It said tourists should take particular care if passing through isolated tourist areas on foot or on tourist scooters, especially at night.
Passengers travelling to and from the airport ‘Las Americas’ in Santo Domingo at night should also be alert.
The FCO said there have been several reports of passengers being stopped and robbed and/or assaulted en route to their final destination. Most attacks have occurred early in the morning or late at night.
The Tourist Police (POLITUR) can provide assistance to tourists and can be contacted on the free telephone number 1-809-200-3500.
