Fog causes London airport to almost grind to halt
London City Airport was brought almost to a standstill early this morning due to thick fog which meant only the occassional flight was able to take off or land at the Docklands air strip.
Dozens of inbound and outbound flights were cancelled, diverted or seriously delayed prior to 10:00 hours.
The few exceptions were British Airways flights from Scotland, Zurich and Madrid.
Although the fog is expected to lift throughout this morning, the airport is warning passengers to expect further delays and cancellations.
The airport said they should check the status of their flights with their airlines.
Heathrow Airport has also been affected, with inbound flights experiencing delays of around 15 minutes, but an airport spokesman said the fog was expected to clear around 09:00.
Manchester Airport was forced to cancel a few, mainly domestic, flights this morning due to the fog, and some others were diverted or delayed. Two plane loads of Manchester City fans travelling from last night’s defeat in Barcelona were diverted to Newcastle, although the flilght carrying the football team home did manage to land later at Manchester.
Gatwick Airport said it had no weather-related delays or cancellations.
