Foreign Office issues warning following Stockholm terror attack

British visitors to Stockholm are being warned to stay away from public areas after an apparent terror attack in the centre of the city.

Local media says at least three people were killed when a lorry drove into a store in Drottninggatan, one of the city’s main pedestrian streets, just before 3pm local time today.

Many others are believed to have been injured.

Police have blocked off large parts of downtown Stockholm and they are warning people that it is dangerous to be in the area.

Swedish prime minister Stefan Lofven said that Sweden had been ‘attacked’. He said everything pointed to an act of terrorism. One person has been arrested.

The Stockholm subway system has been completely shut down, according to the BBC, and members of parliament have been ordered to stay in the Riksdag.

There have also been reports of gunfire both at the location of the truck, at Sveavagen nearby and in a completely different part of Stockholm at Fridhemsplan. 

The UK Foreign Office said: "There are reports that incidents have occurred in Drottninggatan and Fridhemsplan in central Stockholm; you should stay away from public areas if possible and follow the advice of local authorities."

The attack comes two weeks after a similar attack in central London, which killed four pedestrians and a police officer and trapped MPs in the Houses of Parliament.
